Can I require a deposit when clients book online? +
Yes. You set a deposit amount — either a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of the service price — and clients must pay it before their booking is confirmed. No deposit means no slot. The money goes directly to your connected Stripe account. You can set different deposit amounts for different services (e.g. $30 for a trim, $75 for a full color).
How do no-show fees work exactly? +
You set a no-show fee in your service settings. When a client misses their appointment without cancelling within your cancellation window, SmarterCalendar automatically charges that fee to the card on file. The charge happens without any action from you. You receive a notification that it was collected. The fee goes directly to your Stripe account. No awkward phone calls, no chasing — your policy enforces itself.
How do SMS appointment reminders work? +
Every SmarterCalendar account comes with a real dedicated local phone number in your area code. Automatic SMS reminders go out before every appointment at intervals you configure — for example, 48 hours before and again 2 hours before. The reminder includes the appointment details and a link where clients can confirm or cancel. When clients reply, you see their messages in your inbox. Most stylists see their no-show rate drop significantly within the first few weeks.
What happens to the deposit if a client cancels? +
You decide. You can configure a cancellation policy — for example, "full refund if cancelled 48+ hours before; deposit forfeited if cancelled within 24 hours." The system enforces it automatically. If you choose to offer a full refund regardless, that's an option too. The policy is shown to clients at booking before they pay.
How long does setup take? +
Most stylists are fully set up and accepting bookings with deposits enabled in under 10 minutes. You add your services (name, duration, price, deposit amount), set your availability hours, connect your Stripe account, and share your booking link. There is a setup wizard that walks you through each step. No technical skills required.
Does SmarterCalendar take a percentage of my bookings? +
No. SmarterCalendar charges a flat monthly fee ($25, $50, or $100). We take zero percentage of your bookings or revenue. The only fees are Stripe's standard payment processing fees (typically 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction) — the same fee you'd pay with any payment processor. You keep 100% of what clients pay you beyond that.
Can I use it for a team with multiple stylists? +
Yes. The Standard plan ($50/month) supports multiple staff accounts with individual schedules. Each stylist gets their own calendar and availability. Clients can choose a specific stylist at booking, or you can assign them. There is no per-seat fee — one flat monthly price covers your whole team.
Do clients need an account to book? +
No. Clients book through your public booking page without creating an account. They enter their name, phone, and email, select a service and time, answer any intake questions you've set up, and pay the deposit. That's it. Returning clients who book again are automatically recognized by their phone number.
